Artists have unique sets of skills learned through the materials, elements, structures, and rules of their art forms. They know, however, that their greatest art is created when they take those basic techniques and break them apart just enough to take them to the edge and create something innovative and new. It requires a thorough knowledge of the artistic process and the willingness to step out of their comfort zones.

I believe the most important single thing beyond discipline and creativity is daring to dare.
~ Maya Angelou

Great artists are courageous and daring.

  • They use experimentation and variation.
  • They’re broadminded.
  • They open up the artistic process and free themselves from immobilizing fears.
  • They break free from the past and push themselves to do something they wouldn’t ordinarily do.
  • They use materials they’ve never used before.
  • They expand structures.
  • They change their daily routine.

It’s vital that artists know the techniques of their art forms; but once they are secure in their knowledge, they can still honor those practices as they break through just enough to create something new. They see where that will take them, knowing all along that it will probably be uncomfortable at first and they may have to go back and try again.
